FACILITATIVE or PROBLEM-BASED: (Includes Most Secular Programs) Conflict viewed as negative; an impasse to be overcome; a problem to be resolved through Mediator’s impartiality and expertise. Short Term. Mediator oversees clients to enforce deadlines. Mediator’s role is primary, serving as expert guide/referee. Mediator encourages clients to disengage from past, and focus on current problems rather than history. Conciliation/compromise stressed. Primary goals: Compromise and resolution of current problems in order to arrive at legal settlement. Terms & methods are directed by mediator who helps clients stay within defined parameters & meet deadlines. Limited: Pre-defined and isolated issues are targeted for problem-solving through compromise, while avoiding emotional entanglements. Emotional responses viewed as irrelevant to the issues and are strictly controlled by mediator. Choices and consequences are coached and channeled by Mediator Methodology entails a neutral facilitative approach which focuses on the on clients’ present issues. Controversy is avoided or segregated so mediator can develop areas for compromise and settlement. Swift legal agreement devoid of self-scrutiny or consideration of virtue. |
